Night in the City

On August 24, 2011November 17, 2018 By BekkiIn Musings & RamblingsLeave a comment

Lavender sky outside my window, and the city spread out below me like a child-sized model.  Except it goes on long past the borders of any imitation.

We watched E.T. on a big screen last night, outdoors in a little plaza.  The last time I did the outdoors on the big screen thing it was to see René Flemming play La Traviatta in Trafalgar Square.  There must have been several trends of thousands of people there, packed into the stairs and the fountains and the flagstones.  All silent as we watched.  By contrast, there weren’t even a hundred prior in the plaza last night, and most if them weren’t even aware there was a movie above them.

Even so, it was magical.

It never snows on the first of December

I walked home in the snow today, and it made the city seem almost magical.  There’s something about the first few snowfalls, the ones that come down lightly, hesitantly, barely sticking to car roofs and fence rails.

By the time mid-January comes and all the snow has turned into grady slush and frozen puddles, I’ll look back on this and wonder how I could have thought the snow was anything but a bother.  For right now, though, I will enjoy the way the white flakes look on my red coat and in my dark hair, and tilt my face up to try to catch snowflakes in my eyelashes.

It was dark when we got to the intersection, the streets completely deserted. The night was much warmer than we had any reason to expect, but the air still held the chill of early autumn. Signs taped to telephone poles and stop signs led us down streets and around corners until we suddenly found ourselves in the Lost Horizon Night Market.

To Market

Yesterday afternoon I went in search of a farmer’s market.  There’s one on Fridays near the house, but when I went by last week it consisted of a table of apologetic vegetables, a stand with homemade jams and jellies, and a baker.  I suspect that might change in the summer, when there’s more fresh produce coming in, but it wasn’t a very inspiring trip.  I decided, therefore, to go big rather than local, and came across the Dag Hammarskjöld Greenmarket.

As I walked toward 47th, I was certain I had written down the address wrong.  I walked along 2nd Ave, past the bodegas and the sandwich shops, the pharmacies and the bars, wondering where a farmer’s market was going to fit in.  Then I turned onto 47th and saw it, a green gem in the heart of the city.
